This blog is not a platform on which I plan to engage in politics but I do not think that the abortion issue brought up in last night’s debate is a matter of politics. It is a matter of life, morality, ethics, and ultimately the gospel of Jesus Christ. Christians should be more fired up about what was said on this issue than any other. Below is my own understanding of each candidate’s view on the issue of abortion. They represent their party. They represent the sentiment of Americans on either side as well. Though I don’t agree fully with either stance, one position clearly supports life more radically than the other. Therefore when it comes to my vote, this is what’s at stake.
When asked how their faith impacts their view on abortion: (answers paraphrased in “Emily” language)
Ryan: I am a devout Catholic. Catholics hold that all life is precious and that life begins at conception. Therefore abortion is murder. That is the Catholic stance. And since I am a Catholic I agree and will uphold this teaching.
Biden: I am a devout Catholic. Catholics hold that all life is precious and that life begins at conception. Therefore abortion is murder. That is the Catholic stance and I respect the Catholic stance. But I don’t think its right for Catholics to impose our views on people. Therefore if Catholics think abortion is murder its murder to them but not murder to others so we should keep it legal.
Now apply this same postmodern “logic” of the VP to stealing, paying taxes, murder outside the womb, paying rent, sending our kids to school, rape, cheating, adultery etc. As Matt wisely brought up last night, what if President Lincoln had taken this same stance when it came to slavery- “I don’t agree with slavery but its wrong for me to impose my views on everyone else.” This is the epitome of the post-modern philosophy of thinking and application of God’s moral standards. Except in this case, millions of innocent lives have been and continue to be murdered.
Some quotes from last night on the matter: (from the Twitter world)
“In the U.S., abortion is the blood sacrifice we make on the altar to the goddess of unfettered sexual behavior.” Trevin Wax (best quote of the night to me)
“Over 50 million persons have been killed legally under the regime of Roe v. Wade. It’s the greatest human rights crisis of our time.” Denny Burk
“Supporting life is not imposing your view! Forcing people to pay for abortions who are against abortions does!” Dr. Hamilton
“Social Security & Medicare Wouldn’t B Issues If America Had Not Aborted 3000+ Tax Payers a Day Since RoevWade. Moral Crisis=Economy Crisis.”
