How Deep

Below is one of my all time favorite songs. My brother sang this at our wedding and it was such a beautiful moment of worship. Thinking to Christ’s death I remember the much used phrase: “He did it for YOU!” That is so true but still many like to back that up by saying that he ultimately did it for His glory. That is also true. I think that if we don’t ground Christ’s love in God’s ultimate glory, His love might be cheapened. There was nothing in us that deserved His love. Yet out of His grace, God emptied His wrath upon His perfect Son so that we might have a way of eternal forgiveness and escape from His judgement. And when we repent and believe this grace causes us to love God and bring Him glory with our lives.

“In this is love, not that we have loved God but that he loved us and sent his Son to be the propitiation (atoning sacrifice) for our sins.” ~ 1 John 4:1  (parenthesis added)

“For by grace you have been saved through faith. And this is not your own doing; it is the gift of God, not a result of works, so that no one may boast.” ~ Ephesians 2:8-9

“How Deep the Father’s Love for Us”

How deep the Father’s love for us,
How vast beyond all measure
That He should give His only Son
To make a wretch His treasure

How great the pain of searing loss,
The Father turns His face away
As wounds which mar the chosen One,
Bring many sons to glory

Behold the Man upon a cross,
My sin upon His shoulders
Ashamed I hear my mocking voice,
Call out among the scoffers

It was my sin that left Him there
Until it was accomplished
His dying breath has brought me life
I know that it is finished

I will not boast in anything
No gifts, no power, no wisdom
But I will boast in Jesus Christ
His death and resurrection

Why should I gain from His reward?
I cannot give an answer
But this I know with all my heart
His wounds have paid my ransom
